How to stay safe in anonymous chat rooms

The single most important rule: never share information that could identify you offline. That includes your full name, home or work address, phone number, school, workplace, email address, or social media handles. Pick a nickname that isn't tied to any of your other online accounts.

• Don't reuse a username from Instagram, TikTok, Discord, or gaming platforms.
• Avoid mentioning your exact city — "the northeast" is fine, your zip code is not.
• Never share photos that include your face, your home, license plates, or ID cards.

Links pasted in chat are a common vector for phishing, malware, and scam sites. If a stranger sends a shortened link (bit.ly, tinyurl, etc.) or urges you to "check this out right now," assume it's hostile until proven otherwise. Copy the link and inspect it before visiting, or simply ignore it.

The most frequent scams in anonymous chat rooms follow predictable patterns:

• Romance scams: a "perfect match" who quickly professes strong feelings and eventually needs money for an emergency.
• Investment / crypto scams: unsolicited tips about a "guaranteed" coin, trading group, or signal channel.
• Sextortion: a new friend who moves the conversation to video, records you, and then demands payment.
• Fake support: messages claiming to be from Chat Friend staff asking for your session ID or a code.

If any conversation involves money, cryptocurrency, gift cards, or "verification" links, disengage immediately. Chat Friend staff will never DM you asking for codes or payments.

In an anonymous room, the friendly 22-year-old from your city might be someone completely different. This isn't paranoia — it's the baseline assumption you should carry into every conversation. Enjoy the chat for what it is, but don't make decisions (financial, emotional, or in-person) based on claims you cannot verify.

If you do decide to meet someone offline, treat it like a first date with a total stranger: meet in a busy public place during the day, tell a friend where you're going and when to expect you back, and arrange your own transportation both directions. Never invite them to your home, and never visit theirs, on a first meeting.

Anonymous chat happens in your browser, so the browser is your main line of defense. Keep it up to date, use a reputable ad blocker or script blocker if you're comfortable configuring one, and never download files a stranger sends you. If someone wants to "show you something" that requires installing software, they are trying to hack you.
